Sword of Ages Review

Spy Monkey Creations Inc.'s PoeGhostal.com exclusive

Boys will be boys. Especially boys that love their toys.

But for me, and probably most of you, buying a new figure just isn't enough all the time. Yeah, figures usually come with enough accessories or weapons to make you completely satisfied with your new purchase. But often there's those pesky times when we're just so damn spoiled that we have a desire for a "little bit more". Well thanks to some like-minded individuals that not only want cool extras but actually brainstorm to create these custom accessories we can get that "little bit more" to compliment our figures.

One particular custom accessory is the freshly debuted item that this review focuses on, The Sword of Ages. This slick battle-ready sword is a www.poeghostal.com exclusive made especially by the "weapon factory" known as SpyMonkeyCreations Inc. For those not familiar with Poe Ghostal's site it essentially revolves around toy news, toy discussion and thoughts/blogs from Poe himself.  The Sword of Ages is actually the second exclusive from this tandem, the first being the Dread Axe of Darkness. The Dread Axe is a "variant" of an existing SpyMonkey item known as the "Witching Axe of Ruination" which u can view the original versions HERE. This offering from Poe's collaboration with the SpyMonkey team is an all new item which has never before been released through SMC's own site. This site-exclusive item (through Poe Ghostal's Points of Acquisition) is priced at $7 per sword plus shipping. (NOTE: As of the writing of this review both items have sold out of their current runs but should be made available soon for purchase.)

Poeghostal.com's two exclusives, The Sword of Ages and the Dread Axe of Darkness

The Sword of Ages has been dubbed "the sword of the footman, the mercenary, the knight errant...a simple blade, functional, reliable, easily replicated…but to its owners, indispensable" by its designer and in my eyes it holds up well to Mr. Ghostal's definition. As every custom weapon piece from SMC Inc. the Sword of Ages is an item that feels solidly constructed. The hilt of the sword is made from a gold plastic while the blade is a separate silver piece inserted and glued securely into the hilt. There are no paint applications to this sword since both colored parts are cast from that color resin. I received my sword without any bending so you should have no worries of having to reshape it from being warped or crooked. It may or may not be clearly visible in all the pictures but the silver blade tends to have a bit of a "pearl-esque" shine to it which makes it gleem very nicely.

Compared to previous SMC Inc. releases the Sword of Ages is simpler but those were the true intentions going in by both parties. The Sword of Ages is semi-inspired by a similar looking sword that the Masters of the Universe character Tri-Klops wielded in one of the vintage mini-comics that accompanied the vintage figure. Don't let "simpler" fool you into thinking it's not a worthy sword for your figures to do battle with. Compared to swords from SMC Inc.'s previous lineup and similar figure's swords it can very well hold its own as an all-purpose blade for many figures and is sized appropriately to do so.

Now, the Sword of Ages was "specifically" made for collectors of 6-7inch scale fantasy action figures. With that said its no surprise it fits best with figures from the currently ongoing Masters of the Universe Classics toyline like many of the previously released SMC Inc. custom weapons. The Sword of Ages shines through as a solid blade that every and any warrior can use even if not from the MOTUC toyline. Consideration was definitely taken so that the hilt would be appropriately sized to let figures from many toylines use the Sword of Ages as their weapon-of-choice.

The $7 price tag may sway some folks from purchasing this sword but it's a quality piece that is a limited, custom-made item so the price isn't outrageous by any means. If the color choice isn't exactly what you're looking for you'll have to wait a few months before SpyMonkeyCreations Inc. release their additional colored variants. Overall this is definitely a nice addition to your personal weapons rack no matter what figures you'll have equipped with it when war is on the horizon.
